Todayon Martin Luther King Day, Texas Street is proud to celebrate in this day of equality. It is appropriate that we commemorate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of love and views of a nonviolence lifestyle.

Remembering the true fights of courage and love which Mr. Martin Luther King can be compared to the writings and teachings of Mr. Mohandas K. Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) .

Growth within mans nature and human desire both are needed to succeed in Life. A proper balance in health and mind in combination with a spiritual sense of forgiveness is needed to the begin a healing ones shallowness.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was influenced by Gandhi’s believe in nonviolence.

  • King studied both Gandhi and his teachings. Gandhi inspired him with a new way of looking at things.
  • King learned that power and social change can come from love and truth.
  • Gandhi’s search for truth influenced King.  Gandhi believed he could find truth through tolerance and concern for others.
  • Gandhi believed you have to have courage to be truly nonviolent.  When King went to India
  • in 1959, he said it influenced him because he go to meet Gandhi’s son other relatives.
  • King loved the fact that he did not witness anger while he was in India.
  • After King talked to some of Gandhi’s followers, he was was convinced

Initially, King believed that becoming a minister of the church would be the best way to lead his people to equality and freedom. During a period of soul-searching, he had, in his words, “despaired of the power of love in solving social problems.” At this point, he was coincidentally introduced to the life of Mohandas K. Gandhi in a sermon by Mordecai Johnson, president of Howard University, who had just returned from a trip to India.

Suge Knight arrested, later released.

Marion “Suge” Knight, the co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Tuesday night. TMZ reports that he was booked at the West Hollywood station at about 1:15 a.m., given a citation, and released.

According to the report, the arrest stemmed from a warrant regarding a traffic stop on September 23, when the music mogul was given a ticket in Beverly Hills for driving with a suspended license and running a stop sign. Knight, 45, was released on his promise to appear in court within two months.

NBC News, Sgt. Shawn Ruda, spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, said when stopped, Knight had done nothing wrong. “A person who’s been arrested multiple times, you see if he has any outstanding warrants,” Ruda said. “And he did.” NBC reports that Knight has been incarcerated several times and in 2006 filed for bankruptcy.

The sound of a new note.. Forro!

Much of the time a person finds him or herself clicking, Click click Click, and searching search search, for cool music. By the time you scroll through the endless and countless ads and the “next” pages links of googles or yahoo’s results sometimes someone can find light at the end of the tunnel.

Introducing the band Quarteto Olinda, a musical amalgam that’s been compared to zydeco, the Texas Two-Step and even mazurka. Claudio Rabeca, quoated over NPR says fans love forro because it makes them get up and move.

Forró is a kind of Northeastern Brazilian dance that developed from European styles of folk music such as “Chula” and “Xotis” Both are both are heard during the annual Festa Junina (June Festival), a part of Brazilian traditional culture which celebrates some Catholic saints. One of the most celebrated day of the festival is known as São João.
Foro is thought to have originated sometime around the turn of the century, it involves instruments and techniques brought from Europe centuries ago, and a lot of local innovation. Carlos Sandroni is an ethnomusicologist at the University of Pernambuco and he explains that the region has a long history as a mixing bowl of musical styles; forro is likely a product of that.

Finding Esperanza Spalding

As i was cruising along the pages of NPR.com this morning, i found myself clicking away untill I ran into the Tiny Desk Concert series. Then Bam! there it was, a great article featuring the artist, Esperana Spalding. NPR has followed Esperanz Spalding as far back as of May 15, 2008 -where NPR noted “There are many gifted singers in jazz today, and no shortage of accomplished acoustic bass players. But few jazz artists can be both.”
Via NPR.com

Esperanza Spalding (born October 18, 1984 in Portland, Oregon. She is an American multi-instrumentalist best known as a jazz bassist and singer, who draws upon many genres in her own compositions

Esperanza Spalding albums often blends her soaring vocals and her deep bass lines. At 23, she earned a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and graduated a year early to become the youngest faculty member in the school’s history, and she’s also played with jazz legends such as Patti Austin, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock.

As a big Herbie Hancock fan, i was totally impressed from this point on! Her music is inspiring and holds a vocal tone which a person can only campare to angels playing at a playground. For her Tiny Desk Concert, she mostly played original tunes from Chamber Music Society, her new album pairing a jazz rhythm section with a three-piece string trio.

Patrick Jarenwattananon from NPR mentions ” For her Tiny Desk Concert, she mostly called original tunes from Chamber Music Society, her new album pairing a jazz rhythm section with a three-piece string trio. The two tunes bookending her set alternated the gossamer with the rich and darkly hued: the album opener “Little Fly,” her setting of a William Blake poem, and “Apple Blossom,” featuring her regular guitarist, Ricardo Vogt.”

Its always rare when a person ,by shear “Chance”, can run into a great article on such a gifted and talented artist. For TSS, it was great to hear to Esperanza this morning via one of our many favorite sites.

Thank you NPR =)
